JL Audio makes good quality gear and is generally considered one of the better mid-level brands. Some of their gear is top notch. Do you have specific questions?

To be more specific, I am a big SQ guy, but when I build this system I have a certain goal in mind. My former employer has a very nice custom show truck. His system consists of 24 Swiss Audio (Yuck!) 61/2's and tweeters, and 2 Memphis 15'' MOJO subs which are each powered by a Memphis MOJO 2400 watt class D. The 15's are in a approx. 16 cubic foot (yes, you heard right) box with an incorrectly designed slot port. He hits about 157-158 db on his AudioControl meter.

Now let me get to the point. The system I had in mind consists of 2 JL ZR series 6 1/2'' component sets powered by a JL 300/4. Mid-bass will be covered by 2 JL 8w3's powered by a 300/2 in sealed boxes under the dash or in the kicks. The biggest question in my mind is what subs to run. I want excellent SQ (I'm a big SQ guy, which in my area is REALLY weird for a 25 year old guy), but I also want to stomp those MOJO's in SPL. I am considering 3 13w6vs, each powered by a single 500/1, and of course, 3 Optima Blue Tops, caps (probably like a 5 farrad), and a beefed up alternater. I have heard the w6's, and they sound great, but I have never heard them in a SPL shootout. I want to use a ported enclosure. Should I go with 2 13w7's instead?? What do you guys think? Keep in mind that I am not super familiar with JL, it just seems that they offer a top notch product. Do you think my system could have a shot at out SPLing the MOJO's? By the way he has a 2001 4 door F-250. His box is blown-through the bed into the cab. I will be installing mine in a Nissan Xterra. Thanks for any feedback! I really appreciate it.

Man, this is a tough fight. 157-158 are very good numbers on a legit mic. And being that you wanna have a SQ car I find these numbers are fairly hard to reach. My opinion here is that I would run the W6's drivers, all 3 of them and do a ported enclosure but I would make 2 sets of ports that can be changed out. First set of ports are for every day driving and I would tune them low, around 31-32 hz, but thats simple opinion. Now for the second set you are gonna wanna figure out the resonate frequency of the vehicle and tune your box accordingly to get the highest SPL number. Run port set one for day to day driving but when you are gonna get metered pull out the sq ports and throw in the noisemakers. I wont gaurentee that this is gonna hit the numbers you want but I say Its your best shot.

Read the post on McIntosh products. I'm pretty sure this is one of the lines DYohn meant, speedwayaudio1.

I too, would be interested to hear some of the others that you consider to be high-end, DYohn. Thoughts on JL Audio? -- posted image.

If your really looking for SQ you might want to look at other brands before you limit yourself to JL Audio(not that JL is no good, but always best to keep your options open right?). From what I've seen from JL is there are very good quality, but that quality also comes with a hefty price! I knew a lady in the midwest that went by 'The wagon lady'. She had an old '86 station wagon that was extremely modified specifically for SQ competition and she would be slaying people up in contests. Not sure about every detail of her car, but I do know that she was running a lot of 8 inch Alumapro Alchemy subwoofers in the back behind the seats. I've had a lot of experience with Alumapro subs in all sizes and I've noticed that they are kind of a brand that flies under the radar. Not too insane with their prices but aren't cheap neither. GREAT, clean sounding bass! Very reliable subs. You might wanna check these out if SQ is what your into!

By the way, my cousin has hit over 140db with 2 Alumapro subs and only a small single amp! (less than 1000watts) These subs can really hit! You definitely have a shot at beating out 2 15" Memphis subs with Alumapro or even JL Audio for that matter!! (not a big fan of Memphis,sorry) I will say this... you really should pick one or the other. If SQ is what your going for then stick with that. If not, then get crazy with the SPL scene. Doing both is going to be extremely hard. You sound like your going in the direction that I am though. You want a really nice, clean sounding system, but still want that EXTREME bass to blow you outta your seat! (right along with your eardrums!)hahaha! :)-

Thanks for the info! I totally forgot about Alumapro. You're right, they do slip under the radar! They are one of the only brands I haven't looked at yet.
