Every once in a while the unit shuts itself off and reboots. It does it in all modes. No commonality to the times when it does so. It was professionally installed so I do not know how it was wired. Any thoughts on what to look for?

The unit is installed in my 2008 Audi S4 convertible.

What is a dnn 990hd? It sounds very impressive.
And here are your answers:-
Internal software glitching
Power supply
Professionally installed? Then why are you posting here?
Take it back to the installers!

What kind of vehicle? What brand and model wiring harness did they use? Most common cause of your problem is the inability of the digital module to provide enough current to the deck. Solution is to have them connect the yellow wire of the deck to the other side of the digital module.

08 Audi Craig = +, - and a pair of CAN Hi Lo at the H/Unit so either hard wire at the fusebox (no ACC) or as you suggest connect yellow wire to fusebox input.

If you are using the Pac-Audio C2R-AUDI, Have them connect the radio's yellow wire to the car side of the harness.
