hello;

  i just wanted to get a few opinions if possible about the cost of an install. i attempted to try out a few local shops in my area to get a quote on the installation for my vehicle...i already own all of the electronics and front 3way spk set. the shop quoted for 4 10in subs, i have all the distribution system and 2nd alternator and batteries installed ready to go. I must admit that the design and the type of quality work that the shop does is first rate. i looked at some of the shops work and a large porforilo of pictures from past custom work.. this shop seemed to have it together if you know what i mean. i was quoted to install the HU which i'm supplying and make custom pods up in the cornors of the dash (1&4 mid/tweet) and a 6'' mid bass in the door.. a new custom center consol that replaces the stock consol (to house 2 subs/2 mono eqs/.... plus at the rear of the vehicle a really nice amp rack and 2 more subs that are turned off for a daily driver and turned on if i feel like competing... first i must admit that the install was mosly for just labor of installation plus the cost of installation materials (i already own the electronics and front stage 3way spks, cables/wires and fuse blocks) but a top notch design and projected finished look... the shop mentioned good enough to be featured in a mag with not much of a problem (their work i seen is that good, i must admit)... but here my question and would love to hear some opinions... i was quoted 12k... i already have 10k worth/spend on electronics and the isolated dedicated alternator/batteries. i was planning on doing it all myself... again i must admit that it would really take a very qiuck and good education to learn how to do this install as well as this shop could do... i'm not bad but i'm not that experienced in custom work to do as well of a job as this shop could but for what i do alread know,,,, i think 12k is absord????? i would say we are talking 2k in materials and the wholesale sale cost of the subs to the shop... it appears to me that this shop would be charging 10k in labor profit.... i'm a builder andd contractor by trade... we build the complete frame of a house for 12k and that 12k pays a whole lot of workers/employess salaries... one man will be doing this custom install... but i must say,,, this shop is doing top notch work.... i was wondering if i could get some opinions and maybe some of you expert DIY pros who have the knowledge and skill of doing such type of award winning work... the vehicle only cost me 25k and thats twice as much as this shop wants to charge just for this install... i own the electronics already.... any opinions anyone?

clueless? but willing!

Unless this is west coast customs, no way

i have a guy in my town that is one of the best in this whole area

I have seen many magazines with his work in it, and i know that he would probably end up chargin only maybe 3k for the installation

it looks like you may be getting jacked

12 grand???? sick.... unless their entering you into 50 competition shows that have 50 grand 8 place prizes their full of crap. You'd be over paying for labor by about 9k. I know for a face that a high quality job done by ANY install shop will not cost the shop more than 5k. I'm currently building my system out of fiber glass (3 subs with amp rack/battery container, custom paint) and its only projected to cost me $300 in materials (thats not including the cost of my air brush unit or the cost of disposable stuff like gloves, brushes, cups etc).
My opinion, go somewhere else and get a new quote.

what area of the country do you live?
what kind of vehicle is the system going in.
what specific things are you looking for in the install?
could you be more discriptive on what the would be doing to the vehicle.
also the name of the shop would help too
how is it going to be finished?
how long is it going to take them to do it?
are you getting anything else with that price?( like interior upgrades, paint, body modifications)
there are a lot of shops that are good and know it so they charge for it. i worked at one for a while, ad we got an average of 5-25k for labor on most vehicles with big systems.
lemme know specifically what you are looking for with your finish system and i might be able to give you an idea.
