08 Ford F250 Diesel Remote Start

My buddy has this vehicle and starts it to let warm up all the time. Since I install remote starts pretty often I suggested he put one on. He said he heard from other diesel owners that it isn't a good idea. I informed him that the units can be programmed for the glow plug warm up cycle. Does anyone know or heard of a reason to not put a remote start on a F250 Diesel? Thanks Much!Wire Monkey

I have a 99 7.3 Ford Diesel. It's had a RS for 8 years. An unusual situation with the 7.3 (99-04 partial) is that in extremely cold weather, it will not produce much power while the Exhaust Backpressure Valve is still closed. This valve is present to promote faster warm-up, but because of the backpressure, the engine doesn't perform very well. I installed the RS mostly for this reason, to allow warm-ups without trotting out into the snow. I believe the 08 is the 6.4. (I may be off a year). The 6.4 is a common rail injection system, and cold start and warm-up isn't as fussy as it is with the HEUI 7.3 and 6.0. Start it and go. There is some opinion that letting a diesel "warm up' under no-load conditions can be detrimental. Fuel dilution of the lube oil, ring glazing, stuff like that. That Diesels should be fired, and driven to put load on them. They like load. I agree that a loaded engine warms up faster, I have no opinion whether no-load operation during warm-up is detrimental. Sorry for the TLDR, but perhaps this will shed some light on where your friend is getting his opinion from. I re-read your post. He lets it warm up all the time. Perhaps his reservations are with the problems from sub-par installs of RS systems? Even though you're his bud, he doesn't want to "go there" by cutting his truck's wiring. The "glow plug" thing is almost moot with the Common Rail Injected Diesels. Especially the Duramaxes. They fire right up even at 0 degrees.
