I have a 10" MTX 8000 sub and it's prolly only gettin about 370W RMS to it. It's rated at 400W RMS. The other day it started having this buzzing type sound. I opened up the box and played it in the air and it still did it. I don't think I could have blown it, but who knows. I checked the sub for any visual indications of damage and there were none. Any ideas??
Oh and today my amp (a SONY) crapped out on me. It would start playing and then the "OFFSET" fault light would come on. ANyone know what that means? Old Sony manuals aren't online apparently or else I would have found out whats wrong. Thanks...

usually the buzzing sound means that the sub is blown or on its way out!  Are you using the sony amp on it?  that could be the reason the amp is going into offset mode.

You can blow a sub with very little power if it is distorted. You can underpower a sub all day long and it will be fine but if you clip the signal, be it from the cd player or the amp, that signal will be reproduced by the sub as distorotion. There is a very good chance that your sub has a blown voice coil due to clipping or a failure of the amplifier.
Top Secret, I can tell you but then my wife will kill me.
