Anyone know the "correct" way to remove the panel?

With care.  I've found that this: http://www.crutchfield.com/S-DBdSebbVuxd/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?i=18187650 door removal tool really helps.

1)  Find and unfasten all the screws

2)  Pop up the panel using that tool or another small lever near the clip points
3)  With the door loose look inside the panel for places where wires / door lock bar is connected
4)  Taking care not to break any of that stuff, take the wires and door locking bar off the plastic panel

If you're still unsure, crutchfield sells mastersheets, showing where all the fasteners and clips are for like $4.00, if I remember correctly.

Bls_15 you have a Private Message (PM).

You have to remove the screw in the door "armrest cup", remove the sail panel (held on very tightly with a retaining clip), pry up the power windows and door lock panel (pry up at the rear and pull towards the rear also, the rear as in towards the rear of the vehicle), THEN you can start using the door removal tool (a puttyy knife in my case) to release the retaining clips on the side and and bottom of the door. After you have made sure all clips are taken off, slide the panel upwards off the window channel. Thats about it.
