I know exactly what you mean. I got an Alpine HU for the first time yesterday switching from JVC(loved my AR760)/Pioneer 8400(died). Out of the box the Alpine sounded better than the Pioneer. Pioneer and Sony just seem to spend more R&D on flashy graphics and designs than quality products anymore.
